Synopsis (as taken from GoodReads)

When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty’s resentment and anger.

At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

Review

This is another novel set in the same world as The Remnant Chronicles. While I, myself have yet to read that trilogy, this book reads as its own novel. I was super eager to read this arc as I’ve been wanting to buy The Kiss of Deception for a while now. I previously read her book(s) The Adoration of Jenna Fox, so I already knew I was in for a wonderfully written novel. I really loved Mary Pearson’s world building to this book! it totally blew me away. I could tell that her writing skills have sharpened and this book brings all new adventures to the table!

I felt that the characters were fun to read and very diverse. Each character has beautifully woven layers and brings a punch to the story. All the characters kept me plenty engaged in this novel. I really loved the romance in this book and thought it was well done without being over the top. The action was just the right amount as well.

After reading the ending I have to say…I need book two NOW, like yesterday…What kind of ending was that to leave me with.. I’ll l just be over here in the corner sulking till I can read book two….
